The item upgrade allows players to boost the gear rating of an item by up 700 points and also add a final bonus. Items can be upgraded by keeping them in inventory before heading to the kiln.

Certain items can be upgraded to increase their stats (like an ideally rolled breakpoint armour used in melee PvP) while others like weapons don't change much post upgrade, and therefore aren't worth upgrading.

Weapons

For instance, a +2 weapon will require two standard Smithing Stones while a+3 requires four. The number of stones required to upgrade the weapon will continue to increase until it is required to use the higher level of Smithing Stones, at which point it will reset to one.

Upgrades to weapons will also reroll the stats of the base. This is usually a good thing, but it can also have negative effects. Upgrades can render items unusable, unless you are extremely lucky.

Upgrades can be made to armor items to increase their performance. For instance, if you have a helm or chest, this will increase its defense base while gloves and belts will enhance their required strength and dexterity. Armor also has an option to reroll its Enhanced Defense%, meaning that it could change its roll to a lower value.

The upgrade template of a weapon will show the new stats it will gain upon upgrading, along with the relative values of those stats. This means that a weapon will gain an attack damage of 3% if it is upgraded from an 8 attack damage sword to an 11 attack damage sword. However, the 3% doesn't mean that it will hit for 3 times less often because it's an absolute number.

Rerolling a weapon is possible by pressing the green button in the item menu using the arrows that circle. This will roll the Best item upgrader and alter its stats, but it won't reset the weapon's levels or connect to the status of your account.

Armor

A few armor upgrades can make a huge difference to your survival. Certain sets offer massive improvements in the resistance to curses, poison, fire, and magic. This can make it easier to traverse difficult areas. In general, the more defense you have on your character, the more health you'll receive from each point. Therefore, it's a good idea to upgrade your armor.

To upgrade your armor, go to one of the Great Fairy Fountains in the game. There are four Great Fairy Fountains in the game and in order to unlock each fountain, you must complete an additional quest involving the Stable Trotters. After you've completed your main quest, and the corresponding fountains, you'll have the option of talking to any Great Fairy in order to unlock the armor upgrade menu.

The amount of materials needed to upgrade each piece of armor will differ. In general, you'll be looking at anything from three to five Red Chuchu Jellies and ten Rupees for the first upgrade, then anywhere between five Rubies and 10 Fire-Breath Lizalfos Horns for each subsequent one. For example the Champion Leathers could be upgraded to +5 defense, allowing you to keep up with a good-sized group of enemies in the majority of cold conditions and the Snowquill Headdress can be upgraded to +20 defense, providing you enough protection to survive a full on raid with a few of your friends.

It isn't possible to upgrade armor the same as weapons. If you're playing as a Warrior, you should focus on upgrading your armor to increase physical power or spell power. It's also worth saving your armor upgrades for armor you'll still be wearing at the end of the game, such as the Ring of Lightning and Spectral Shield, or the helmet you wear for the final boss battle and the Monter Parts Merchant's mask.

You can also gain perks for your armor by presenting the jeweler at Gerudo Town 10 Twinkling Titanite. Generally speaking, you'll want to save these upgrades for the weapon you'll use to win the game, like the Longsword, Battleaxe or Warhammer However, it is useful to have a few upgrades of the chest armor and helmets that permit you to sneak past some monsters.

Potions

Potions are bottled substances that, if consumed, provide the user with the illusion of status for a few minutes. There are five kinds of potions that have different effects and durations.
