Before Toto was formed, members of the band did session work for other musicians. The collaboration led to the formation of Toto in 1976.
Turn Back, Toto's third studio album was criticized by critics due to lacking hit singles. In 1985 the group's lead singer Fergie Frederiksen left the group, and the band held auditions to find a new frontman. Guitarist Steve Lukather was chosen, and the group recorded their album Fahrenheit in 1986.
Toto released Toto XX in 1998 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the band. The group went through old recordings and tapes to create the special record. The album was a hit by fans, and the band embarked on a tour with former members Bobby Kimball, Steve Porcaro, and Joseph Williams.
In the course of the tour for the album 40 Trips Around the Sun The drummer Leland Sklar departed from the group and was replaced by Shem von Schroeck. In 2017, Toto released the double-CD set Falling in Between. It included tour recordings and also an interview with the group.
