Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was an attempt to return to the traditional sextet style, and a more consistent, stronger effort that had a more grittier edge. The more experimental sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the development of the group. Bobby Kimball's growing proficiency was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard skills were also sharper, more complex, and less derivative on earlier efforts.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded the band's Amsterdam live show that was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The group released their new studio album a few months later and embarked on a world tour to promote the album. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started exploring old tapes and demos for a new record featuring songs that were never recorded before. The album was released in 2001 as a double album called Then and Now. It was the first album by the band without a single song titled "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track titled "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
